This project will create a 2-part podcast series detailing Blackface Minstrelsy in Britain and its legacy cross-culturally within Empire. This grossly under-researched and ignored era in Britain’s imperial past is important in understanding the potential reasons for the huge absence of black and ‘ethnic minority’ identifying practitioners in the field of folk music in Britain. It is therefore extremely important within national discourse and racial inequality, and not just in isolation if the genre of folk music and the arts, but when it comes to British national identity as a whole.
